Stephen Curry's ability to make three point shots demands the respect of NBA defenders around the league. The attention that he gets opens the floor up for his teammates and creates a scoring opportunities for himself as well. Often times he is double teamed. The warriors use him as a decoy many times to draw defenders near him, but end up giving the ball the one of his teammates. Lets break down what makes Steph Curry's shot so lethal and tips on what you can do to add this skill of precision shooting to your game!

Lets imagine Stephen Curry awaiting a pass from his teammate Kevin Durant. Curry runs toward the 3 point line and the top of the key. Durant drives towards the lane from the wing and stops on a dime to pass the ball to an open Curry. Lets go through the what Curry does before and during his shot.

One of the most under taught skills of shooting the basketball is early targeting of the hoop.

While the ball is in the air, Curry's eyes and targets the rim of the hoop. What this allows Curry to do is code is position on the court and better his focus for the shot. No matter if the shot is contested with a hand in his face, the hoop has already been targeted and his habitual motion takes over to perform the shot.

When Curry catches the basketball, he does a slight dip with his body. First, his right foot is pointed toward the target. His legs bend as he catches he ball which gives him momentum to get his shot off quicker. As he does this dip, he finds good hand/finger placement on the ball. He finds the groove of the ball with his middle finger as he keeps the ball low.

What he does next is find his 'set point.'The set point is the position of the arms and body just before the release. He keeps his shooting arm, shoulder and his hip aligned. He keeps his upper arm parallel to the floor and in front of his shoulder. His forearm is tilted at a 90 degree angle with the ball in hand as its being pulled up for release. He always finds his set point before his feet leave the ground.

The last part of any shot is the release. Curry holds the ball on his palm then flicks the ball with his for fingers. The ring finger on, flicking from the groove, gives the ball its strongest influence of rotation. He keeps his wrist very relaxed and floppy on his release. The follow through is smooth and consistent. His arm snaps straight on his release and is held at that position until the shot is well completed.

Follow these basic Curry fundamentals and you will be sure to be shooting lights out just like him!
